When I was one and twenty

March 25, 2015

This beautiful setting by George Butterworth of When I was one and twenty, comes from six songs set by Butterworth from A E Housman’s A Shropshire Lad. The songs in that short cycle are all lyrical and lovely, the music doing great service to the words.

A Shropshire Lad falls into the category of poetry I never tire of reading. I could talk about that for hours, but I shall not dwell on it today except to say that it is variously mournful and joyous, but always accessible. And today that is appropriate.

Because it was Dad who introduced them to me, for which I remain grateful. Dad’s birthday is today, and he would have been 85. That is is where the mournfulness lies.

And the joy? An immediate filial descendant of mine, to whom we will refer enigmatically as fionasometimessays, is 21 today. That is what we at sss know as “awesome”.

And it’s an occasion for some appropriate music. Sadly, there are no (in my opinion) decent 21st songs, so I am going up a notch to get someting suitably momentous. I would ask you to imagine that fionasometimessays is not a daughter, but a priest, and that her name is  Zadok.

Have a good day, now. We will.
